Scope & Content |
John and Marie Ranta were Finnish immigrants who moved to Rock, Michigan, and became farmers around the turn of the 20th century. They had three daughters, Lydia, Lempi, and Aili. This album mainly contains black and white photographs from the late 1920s to the early 1930s and was compiled by Lydia Sollberger (Ranta). Many pictures are likely not local, but some are relevant to the Ranta family and pertain to the years around Lydia's graduation from Rock High School. For example, the two photographs on page 15 are likely students from the class of 1928 with Lydia pictured on the far left in each of them. What they are wearing may indicate some were part of theatrical performance when the photos were taken. The same pictures are duplicated on pages 29 and 31. Page 19 has a photograph of the Rock High School's Class of 1928 in their graduation robes with Lydia pictured second from the right. Her sister, Aili, is pictured on page 27 in the bottom left photograph. Photographs are clearly identified on page 41 including one of the students from Rock High School in 1925 and one of Aileen in 1925. The 1929 picture of Aileen is missing from the album. Page 37 has a picture of a Marquette ore dock. The photographs on pages 45 and 47 appear to be taken during April of 1930 on the Ranta family farm but the picture of John and Marie is missing from page 45. Photographs on page 51 were also taken in Marquette and specifically at a cemetery and Presque Isle. Aili is picture with the statue of Father Marquette on page 55 and 65. Pages 59 and 61 are likely the Ranta daughters on their family farm in January 1931. On page 63 there is a photograph labeled "Rock Haytime" with July 1931 written on the photo, but it is unclear if it was taken on the family farm. However, the following page has a closer photograph (possibly double exposed) showing two horses with their names written below it. The last few pages of photographs are likely of Lydia, but the ones labeled Aili and Lempi are missing. |
