Ten letters (copies of originals). These letters written between April 5, 1894 and September 13, 1895 cover discussions between the Gladstone Company, Cleveland Cliffs Company, the Soo Line Railroad, and the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad concerning the building of the furnace at Kipling, construction of railroad tracks, and the construction of housing for workers at the plant. Writers include Lawrence Williams, General Manager of the Gladstone Company in Chicago, William G. Mather, President of the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company, Austin Farrell, Manager of the Pioneer Furnace Department at Negaunee, and F.J. Merriam, Resident Manager of the Gladstone Company at Gladstone. The acquisition and description of land for the construction of the furnace, and the removal of "squatters" from that land is also discussed. The need to decide how to have track laid for railroad access to the property, covering for a dock, and a description of the size, layout, and cost of housing to be constructed at the site are also discussed. |
