Note on back of photo: "1928-1930 ARTHUR JACOBSEN (1314 8th Ave. South) Delta County's first licensed aircraft mechanic stands along side of the 'Tin Goose' - the plane designed by him and built in the old hangar at Wells airport, now occupied by U.P. Concrete Pipe Company. Originally designed to carry pilot and one passenger, it was constructed using wood spars and ribs and plywood covering on wings. Plywood covering consisted of three plies -- total thickness - one sixteenth inch using two plies of mahogany and center ply of popple. Fuselage was constructed of laminated rings with covering of dural. Plane was test flown on the Portage flats and flown that same morning to Menominee to arrive in time to win the first race in the U.P. Air Races contest with Wally Arntzen at the controls." |
