Description |
Ancient Spear Point. From John Walbridge, the donor: "Please accept the enclosed spear point as a gift to the museum. It is, I believe, a product of the Old Copper Culture (~4000 - 1000 BCE). I found it while gardening in about 1962 on a bluff on the left bank of the Escanaba River near Silver Creek, the approximate location being 45.882101 N , 87.102562 W. I was, I am afraid, too young to have thought about the archeological context, though I suspect there was none and that the spear it was attached to was simply lost while hunting. I have seen similar items in the Smithsonian American Indian Museum." While this is merely supposition on the part of Mr. Walbridge, the size and shape of the item are consistent with those of the Old Copper complex of societies in the western Great Lakes. Espcially given the proximity to the copper-bearing lands of the western UP and Keweenaw Peninsula, it is not surprising that such objects would be found in Delta County. Spear Point is approximately 5 inches long and 1 inches wide at the widest point. It is covered with blue-green oxidization characteristic ofr copper. |
