On back: "1871 Bark River, Michigan 1971 (known as Barkville until 1900) was settled in 1871 when the railroad was completed from Menominee to Escanaba. BARK RIVER is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in Bark River Township, Delta County, twelve miles west of Escanaba, Michigan on U.S. Highway 2 and 41 and M-535. Pictures on the front depict the early history of Bark River... the charcoal kilns, the largest load of logs known to be pulled by one team, the grist and sawmill, and Bark River's two main streets. The Bark River Bridge and Culvert Company was also started in Bark River in 1905 in a lean-to addition to the grist mill. There are four churches in Bark River... the Bark River United Methodist Church, organized in 1882, the Salem Lutheran Church (LCA) organized in 1883, the ST. George Catholic Church organized in 1888, and the Bark River Bible Church organized in 1956." |
