Description |
John and Marie Ranta were Finnish immigrant farmers who settled in Rock, Michigan, at the turn of the 20th century. Made by the Standard Churn Company of Wapakoneta, Ohio, this large ornate oak churn was used by the Ranta family to make butter. The wood is varnished in a medium finish with black designs stenciled on the top and sides. Adorning the front and back, below the designs, are painted pink roses between two metal half-hoops wrapping underneath the basin. The inside is unfinished and has four wooden paddles that turn on a bar affixed to the sides of the basin via metal pieces. These metal pieces then attach to an outside metal crank with a wooden handle used for turning the paddles that churn the milk or cream into butter. |
